There was something about the design of the schooner Bluenose that gave her remarkable speed. And it was that speed that made her Canada's most famous ship. Designed by William J. Roué of Halifax and built at the Smith and Rhuland shipyard in Lunenburg, Bluenose was launched on March 26, 1921. Later that year, she would win her first race in the International Fishermen's Trophy defeating a schooner from Gloucester, Massachusetts. For the next 17 years, Bluenose would win every race, a testament not only to the skill of its captain and crew but also to Nova Scotia's rich sailing heritage. In 1963, the Bluenose II, a replica of the original, was built and launched by the same shipyard. In the tradition of the master craftsmen who designed and built these two remarkable vessels, Aitkens Pewter is proud to present, The Bluenose Story Ornament.
